“This should be a good gift for the chief!” said my husband standing up from my lower kitchen cupboard, holding up the large, filigree bedecked glass container filled with liters of golden liquid we had extracted from the honeycomb ourselves.

A meeting with our local chief is an essential part of our lives. As missionaries in Zambia, Africa, finding favor during these appointments can open doors to remote village preaching opportunities. Or close them if we didn’t follow proper protocol.

A Different Kind of Woman

In her book Let Me Be a Woman, Elisabeth Elliot wrote, “The fact that I am a woman does not make me a different kind of Christian, but the fact that I am a Christian makes me a different kind of woman.” With that in mind, stories about women who faithfully served the Lord make me want to dig a little deeper into what we can learn from their example! How can these women’s stories help us be “a different kind of woman”? With that focus, the last time I read through Acts, I especially noticed the few verses the Bible gives us about Priscilla, and found myself challenged by her! Let me share some of what I learned about this woman who consistently served God!

It’s not Just Peanuts

She got up from her woven bamboo chair when I approached her property, two toddlers in tow, and joined me on the ground. As I reclined on one of the rough beams supporting this woman’s thatch-roof shelter, I could only understand a phrase here and there that she spoke. The laughter in her eyes when I said a few words indicated the language barrier went both ways! We chatted, pointed, shrugged, and smiled while enjoying the breeze that easily flowed through, since her shelter had no walls. Her son eventually retrieved a bowl of freshly harvested peanuts from their home and placed it on the ground between us. As she shelled a handful and handed the nuts into my little ones’ eager, dimpled hands, I was so impressed by her hospitality.
